FPDC is a dedicated facility for the freezing and implantation of frozen semen. We store semen in our own tanks on site and access these tanks each day. Semen is stored in large tanks containing liquid nitrogen, similar to a vacuum flask.

What are the Risks?

All tanks have a finite life and the inner bladder may fatigue over time, cracking at the flask neck, causing loss of nitrogen and subsequent thawing (loss) of frozen semen. Such an occurrence is very rare and can be detected by moisture beading on the surface of the tank.

Can I insure my stored semen?

FPDC takes every possible care in the processing, handling and storage of your dog’s semen and this is acknowledged when you sign the freezing and storage agreement. Should you wish to insure your sire’s stored semen for a prescribed value then we can obtain a quote for you. This will be passed on as an additional direct charge to be met prior to the policy being issued.

How is Semen Stored?

Pelleted semen is stored in a small screw cap bottle called a vial (cryovial). Each vial contains one breeding unit. The vials are clipped onto aluminium canes. Depending on the size of the vial (determined by the number of pellets it contains) we can usually fit 3 to 6 vials on each cane. As the cane occupies the physical space in the tank we charge storage by the cane not by the vial – which is more economical for breeders. Within the tanks there are ten canisters and each canister holds fifteen canes.
